Austin’s Great Grandma Hall’s Coffee Cake (1922)
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg cloves
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Streusel – 1/4 cup butter
- Streusel – 1/4 cup flour
- Streusel – 1/4 cup white sugar
- Streusel – 1/3 cup brown sugar
- Streusel – 1 tsp cinnamon
- Streusel – 1/8 tsp salt
Directions
- Put 1/2 cup of butter in large bowl, 1/4 cup in medium bowl and 1/4 cup in a 9x13” glass pan to come to room temperature
- Mix cake ingredients until well blended and set oven temperature to 375 degrees with the pan (with butter in it) so the butter melts
- Cut the streusel ingredients together into crumbs and pour the cake batter over the melted butter in pan
- Spread streusel crumbs over the top and cut coarsely into the batter, bake for 25 mins (Optional: A light sprinkle of cinnamon sugar can be substituted for streusel)
